India’s young wicket-keeper batter, Ishan Kishan, has taken a break from cricket citing mental fatigue. He hasn't appeared on the international stage since the T20I series against Australia in November 2023.

The Ranchi batter also left the recent South Africa tour midway, pulling out of the Test series against the Proteas. He travelled back to India as reports emerged that he was tired due to constant travelling.

Since then, Ishan has missed the home T20I series against Afghanistan and the home Tests against England. Furthermore, he hasn't featured in any of Jharkhand's Ranji Trophy matches this season.

While everyone has been speculating that Ishan Kishan has been absent from cricket due to mental fatigue, a report from RevSportz have emerged suggesting that he was unhappy when Jitesh Sharma was selected over him for the South Africa T20I series.

Notably, Kishan only got a run in two out of the 11 matches during the ODI World Cup. He scored 58, 52, and a duck against Australia in the T20I series post the World Cup.

Despite dealing with both mental and physical fatigue from all the travelling and the pressure of the World Cup, the wicket-keeper batter was counting on starting against the Proteas, but it didn't pan out.

Also, the way India's head coach, Rahul Dravid, tackled the Ishan Kishan issue in the press conference about missing the England Test series was pretty direct. He stated that Ishan needs to play some cricket before rejoining the team.

Here’s what Rahul Dravid had said:

“There is way back for anyone and everyone. I don’t want to go on labouring about the Ishan Kishan point. Have tried to explain this as best as I can, the point was he had requested a break, we were happy to give him the break.”

“Whenever he is ready, I didn’t say he has to play domestic cricket, I said whenever he is ready, he needs to play some cricket and come back. The choice is his. We are not forcing him to do anything.”

Moreover, Ishan Kishan has made himself unavailable even for the last league stage game of Jharkhand against Haryana on February 9. He is currently in Baroda, training alongside the Pandya brothers.
