The IPL is known for its glory and unbeatable cricket excitement. But the tournament had a black patch because of the spot-fixing a few years back. That caused a two-year ban for the Chennai Super Kings.

After a few years, the controversy stirred up again. Former IPL Governor Lalit Modi accused former BCCI President and Chennai Super Kings owner N. Srinivasan of IPL fixing. Modi also revealed that the CSK owner requested that he release Thisara Perera, including Andrew Flintoff.

Modi on Flintoff’s Bid:

In the IPL arena, spot-fixing was a black chapter of the tournament. After wrapping up the mega auction of IPL 2025, former IPL Governor Lalit Modi opened up about that time. He explosively accused former BCCI President and CSK owner N. Srinivasan. Modi revealed how Srinivasan requested him to drop Sri Lanka’s Thisara Perera to make room for the English all-rounder Andrew Flintoff.

"Pick out everything, auction rigging. I gave Flintoff to Srinivasan. No doubts about it; every team knew about it. Srinivasan wasn’t going to let the IPL happen. He was a thorn in our Board. Yes, we told everybody not to pick ‘Flintoff.’ Yes, that I did—because Srinivasan said he wanted it," Lalit Modi said

Appointing a Chennai Umpire: allegations against Srinivasan

After the Indian Premier League was introduced, India’s cricket culture got another new way to enjoy the game. As it was introduced into a T20 format, fans were enjoying it with excitement. However, according to Lalit Modi, Srinivasan was against the IPL initially. But later on, he changed his mind.

“He didn’t like the IPL and he didn’t think it would work, but then it started to work. When everybody started going back-to-back, he was also a member of the board. He was a big adversary of mine.” Modi said.

Later on, Modi accused the former BCCI President of favoring Chennai. According to him, Srinivasan allegedly influenced umpire appointments to ensure the favor of the franchise.

“I went up against him, and he did many things. Umpire fixing, he accused me of it, and I accused him right back. He would change the umpire. At first, I didn’t think much about it. But when I realized he was putting a Chennai umpire on a Chennai game, it became an issue for me. That’s called indirect fixing. When I started exposing those things, he went totally against me.” Modi said.

This has not been the first time CSK have landed in controversy. During the 2015 IPL season, the CSK side was found guilty in illegal betting allegations. MS Dhoni was also dragged in the matters, but no evidence was found against him.

However, due to the illegal activities, CSK was banned for two years, but they eventually made their comeback in the 2018 season.
