Afghanistan is set to face Australia in a must-win game tomorrow in the Super Eight round of the T20 World Cup. Afghanistan need a victory to keep their semifinal hopes alive after losing to India.

Meanwhile, Australia, having defeated Bangladesh in their Super Eight game, will secure a semifinal spot with a win against Afghanistan.

Before this super clash, let's revisit the last time these two teams met in the T20 World Cup.

In the 2022 World Cup group stage, Afghanistan won the toss and elected to field first. Glenn Maxwell played a match-winning knock, scoring 54 runs off 32 balls with 6 fours and 2 sixes.

Current Aussie captain Mitchell Marsh added 45 runs off 30 balls, helping Australia reach a total of 168/8.

Afghanistan fell short by 4 runs

Afghanistan started confidently and reached 99-2 in 13 overs. Needing 70 runs from 7 overs with 8 wickets in hand, many believed Afghanistan had a chance. Gulbadin Naib scored 39 off 23 balls but was run out by Maxwell. In the same over, Zampa took two more wickets, reducing Afghanistan from 99-2 to 99-5.

However, Afghanistan fought back with Rashid Khan playing a blistering innings, scoring 48 off 23 balls. He took Afghanistan close to the target, but they fell just 4 runs short. Australia won the thrilling match by 4 runs in the end.

Maxwell has now thwarted Afghanistan's chances of two big victories against Australia in the 2022 T20 World Cup and the 2023 ODI World Cup, where he scored a double hundred

The Super 8 game presents Afghanistan with an opportunity to seek revenge against Australia.
