In a significant development leading up to the T20 World Cup 2024, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) made the decision to remove Shaheen Shah Afridi from his role and reinstate Babar Azam as the captain of Pakistan's T20I team on Sunday, March 31.
Babar had stepped down from the captaincy across all formats following Pakistan's disappointing exit from the 2023 ODI World Cup. Subsequently, Shaheen was appointed as the T20I captain while Shan Masood took on the Test captaincy.
With no ODI captain named, the PCB has now chosen to return Pakistan's white-ball captaincy to Babar Azam.
Following Lahore Qalandars' poor performance in this year's PSL, where Shaheen's team managed only one win in ten games, coupled with the changes in the PCB setup, Babar emerged as the preferred choice for the captaincy role.
It is pertinent to note that Babar has previously captained Pakistan in five multi-nation tournaments, including the T20 World Cup 2021 and 2022, Asia Cup 2022 and 2023, and World Cup 2023. However, Pakistan has not clinched any ICC or Asia Cup titles under his captaincy.
Since PCB's announcement of Babar's appointment, fans have expressed their opinions, with many being happy with the decision while others have criticized the PCB for reinstating him as the leader once again.
