Gujarat Titans(GT) all-rounder Vijay Shankar has shed light on the tactical implications of the IPL 2024's new bouncer rule, allowing bowlers two bouncers per over.

During a virtual press conference, Shankar shared his comprehensive views on this significant change and its impact on the game.

Navigating The New Bouncer Rule

Shankar remarked on the complexity introduced by the new rule, saying, "It has been a very tricky one – as a bowler, you can’t keep bowling that (bouncers). When a batter sets up and hits one or two boundaries, it becomes difficult for the bowler to switch to a different strategy. Bowlers need to use that properly. In India, there are a few large square-boundary fields, and every fast bowler uses bouncers at those locations."

Adapting to this rule presents a multifaceted challenge, requiring both bowlers and batters to strategise effectively.

He further highlighted the adjustments batters need to make: "It is just about handling those things; we are practicing so hard and have to prepare for everything. It's a fun challenge to just have to respond to whatever is bowled at you when you walk in."

Shankar emphasizes the importance of proactive preparation and adaptability for batters facing the unpredictability of increased bouncers.

Discussing the potential impact on batting strategy, Shankar explained, "Usually, after the first bouncer is bowled, as a batter, you then become ready to hit the stripes. They can now use a slower bouncer or even bowl the bouncer at any time. Therefore, as a batting team, we must be astute and ready for the various delivery types that may arise during a game."

Leadership & Team Dynamics Under Shubman Gill

The all-rounder also touched on the seamless transition within the Gujarat Titans following Shubman Gill's elevation to captaincy, succeeding Hardik Pandya. Shankar praised Gill's leadership and the supportive team environment cultivated under coach Ashish Nehra, where "every individual gets their opportunity and are treated equally," fostering a secure and inclusive atmosphere.

As the Titans prepare to face Sunrisers Hyderabad(SRH) on March 31 in Ahmedabad, fans and players alike are keen to see how the new bouncer rule continues to influence the tournament's outcome.
