Virat Kohli revealed how his unexpected friendship and duo with tennis legend Novak Djokovic started and expressed his respect and admiration for the man, who is considered among the finest sportspersons of the modern era.
The Indian batting legend spoke of how he interacted with his 'text buddy' during a special feature clip shared by the BCCI on Sunday (January 14) ahead of the second T20I of the Afghanistan series in Indore.
Speaking to BCCI.tv in a wonderful interview, Kohli paid back his regards for Djokovic after the latter had made clear his salutation and respect for the Indian cricketing great, revealing the relationship developed "organically" via an Instagram DM.
Kohli Responds To Djokovic Praise
"I got in touch with Novak very organically. I think I was just checking his profile on Instagram and happened to press the message button. I thought I would just say hello maybe. Then I saw a message from him on my DM," Kohli revealed. "I never opened it myself."
"So the first time I saw my messages, I spotted his message there. And I was like let me just check if it's a fake account or something. But then I checked it again and it was legit him. Yeah, we keep messaging each other every now and then."
"When I received my 50th century (in ODIs during the World Cup 2023), he made a story post and sent me a nice message. So there is mutual admiration and respect. And really nice to connect with global athletes who are excelling at a high level," he added.
Kohli said such inter-sport connections send an indirect message of inspiration for the next generation of aspiring sportspersons and he continues to hold Djokovic in great regard for his success and his journey.
