As much of a morale-boost his allround performance was in the opening game of the T20I series against Afghanistan, Shivam Dube realises India are set to base their T20 World Cup 2024 selection more on the forthcoming season of the IPL.

The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) middle-order assaulter and handy part-time seam option underlined the importance of performances in the sterner challenge that awaits as the selectors will look to firm up the squad with focus on certain unsettled slots.

With senior pros Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav, Hardik Pandya and even KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant all eyeing the T20 World Cup in the Caribbean & USA, Dube, who is a backup allrounder to Pandya, recognises the youngsters will have to make stand-out performances in the IPL 2024 to earn their nod.

IPL Critical For India Youngsters Ahead Of T20 World Cup

"It (IPL) would be equally important for all of us, as there are only two T20Is remaining. IPL is a big platform, and if you fare well in it, you get the chance to make it to the (national) team," Dube told the reporters ahead of the second T20I versus Afghanistan in Indore on Sunday (January 14).

"There is a team planning and combination in place. The more we play T20s, the more we get to understand it better."

"Any player playing in the team aims to play in the World Cup. It's definitely in my mind to play the World Cup, but it's far away. Right now, I am aiming to play tomorrow's game and take it on a match-by-match basis."

"It was a good performance in the last game, and the aim would be to better it in the next game, contributing across departments and helping the side win," he added.

Dube bolstered his stocks and reputation with a terrific allround display in the Mohali T20I versus Afghanistan. Making a T20I comeback in absence of injured Pandya, the 30-year-old delivered a tight spell of 1/9 off his 2 overs and then played a measured knock of 60 not out off 40 balls to propel India through in the run-chase.
