The 22-year-old cricketer Dhruv Jurel has emerged as a surprise pick in India's Test squad for the upcoming England series. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced a 16-member squad for the first two matches commencing on January 15, with Jurel's inclusion catching many off guard.

Hailing from Uttar Pradesh, Jurel, a wicketkeeper-batter, is facing stiff competition from the experienced KS Bharat for the wicketkeeping role. Reports suggest that KL Rahul, who recently took up the gloves on the South Africa tour, might play solely as a batter, as the management seeks a specialist wicketkeeper on the expected turning pitches in Hyderabad and Visakhapatnam.

Despite the intense competition, Jurel, who has spent only three years in domestic cricket, remains optimistic. His impressive performance in First-Class and List-A cricket, coupled with a showcase of big-hitting skills in the Indian Premier League last season, has earned him a well-deserved spot in the national squad.

In an interview, Jurel opened up about the sacrifices his parents made to propel him to the highest stage. His journey from not affording a bat to being selected for the IND vs ENG Test series is a testament to the hardships overcame. Recounting a poignant moment, Jurel revealed that his mother sold her gold chain when he was 14 to help him buy a cricket bat, igniting the spark that led to his dream pursuit.

Expressing gratitude to his parents for their unwavering support, Jurel conveyed,

"Thank you will be an understatement. For all the sacrifices my mother and father have made so that their boy could hold a bat and just play cricket. I promise this is just the start. Mummy, papa, aap dono se zamaana hai. Aur abhi bohot naam kamaana hai."

Currently with the India A team facing England Lions in practice matches in Ahmedabad, Jurel showcased his form with a 38-ball fifty in a two-day warm-up game. His recent performances in the Ranji Trophy 2024 game against Kerala further solidify his case for a spot in the playing eleven.

The first Test match of the 5-match series is scheduled to start on January 25 at Hyderabad.
