Perth Scorchers Sign Marcus Harris For Business End Of BBL 2023-24

After missing out on Australia's Test squad for the West Indies series, left-hander Marcus Harris has been named a replacement pick by the Perth Scorchers for the remainder of the Big Bash League (BBL) campaign, according to ESPNcricinfo.

The club will be announcing the Victorian batter's signing for the business end of their season as the defending champions face life without their prominent overseas signing, Zak Crawley, the England opener, who leaves ahead of the Test series against India.

Another attacking English batter, Laurie Evans, will also be missing from the Scorchers playing XI ahead of the playoffs since he has a deal in the UAE-based International League T20.

And even though Stephen Eskinazi returned to the side for the repeat clash versus Brisbane Heat, the most successful BBL club has firmed up its stocks and options with the Harris signing after the left-hander confronted the Test snub and did not have a deal in the T20 competition.

Scorchers Sign Marcus Harris For Remaining BBL

Notably, Harris, a Sheffield Shield regular pushing for Test match selection, was dropped by Melbourne Renegades last season. He has previously played for the Scorchers between 2014 and 2016 and boasts of 14 BBL caps for the club. His overall CV in domestic T20 includes 981 runs at an average of 20.43 and a strike rate of 121.71.

Harris couldn't make the cut for the West Indies Tests despite being identified by the now-retired David Warner as his replacement as the selectors preferred Matt Renshaw for a comeback to the squad after a year-long absence.

The left-hander can immediately slot into Scorchers' playing XI since the BBL eligibility criteria of needing to make a regular season appearance only applies to overseas players. The Scorchers will take on Sydney Sixers on Tuesday (January 16) in their last league game, having secured a playoff spot.

A victory will be critical for them to ensure they set up a qualifying fixture against the numero uno Brisbane Heat on Friday (January 19) in Canberra.
