Host broadcaster of the ICC World Cup 2023 Star Sports revealed a thrilling promo clip ahead of the marquee semifinal between great historic rivals South Africa and Australia at the iconic Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Thursday (November 16).

Star raised the excitement levels multifold among the fans following the action-packed tournament in humongous numbers on television and live streaming platforms globally. While there are more eyeballs anticipated for the India-New Zealand semifinal that takes place in Mumbai a day earlier, there is no shortage of tension and enthusiasm for the South Africa-Australia clash.

Notably, this is the third time in the history of men's World Cup that the two great powers of world cricket stand at loggerheads for semifinal supremacy. Previously, the mighty Aussies have battered their Proteas counterparts in the semifinals of the 1999 and 2007 editions of the tournament.

The 2007 semifinal played in St Lucia couldn't have been a more one-sided affair after the peaking Aussies dismantled the South African batting line-up for an embarrassing 149 all out in a seven-wicket win.

However, the 1999 edition saw a great tied encounter in Birmingham where the Aussies fought back valiantly during the game to equalise scores on 213 and enter the semis on the back of an earlier win in the competition versus the Proteas.

The Star Sports promo focused on the history of the rivalry and highlighted the pain and ecstasy the Proteas would still be feeling about the 1999 defeat. The forthcoming encounter is thus seen as a great chance for them to rewrite the history books and make the summit-clash in Ahmedabad.

The Temba Bavuma-led side has been in significantly better form in the run-up to the knock-outs and had imposed themselves on the Aussies during the league stage in Lucknow. Australia have also played scratchy cricket throughout the competition and unlike the older times, don't start the upcoming semifinal as favourites.
