'Dhoni Changed Indian Cricket’- Amir Cites MSD's Example To Criticise Babar Azam

Following Pakistan's disappointing exit from the 2023 ODI World Cup, former fast bowler Mohammad Amir has shared his perspective on the team's struggles. In a departure from blaming the system, Amir squarely points the finger at the captain, Babar Azam, using MS Dhoni as an example and emphasizing the crucial role a leader's mindset plays in a team's fortunes.

Despite the team's subpar performance, Amir contends in a candid interview on Geo News' ‘Haarana Mana Hay’ that the captain, Babar Azam, holds the responsibility for the team's misfortune. He highlights that the same system has previously proven successful for Pakistan and questions the need for a system overhaul.

“Babar is the captain for the past four years. He has built his team on his own. Buttler is not part of our system, then why did England play so badly? Does the system in England also need a makeover? After the 2015 debacle, Morgan said, 'I want to play this brand of cricket, I want these 25 players,"  said Mohammad Amir.

Amir draws a parallel with the impact of MS Dhoni on Indian cricket, emphasizing Dhoni's role in nurturing players like Ravindra Jadeja without requiring a systemic change.

“We say Dhoni changed India’s cricket, but he never changed the system. People kept saying, for how long will he keep giving Jadeja and Ashwin chances. And now we say Jadeja is the world’s best all-rounder. MS Dhoni has given them the team,”  added Amir.

Amid reports of a central contract dispute impacting national cricketers' performance in major tournaments, calls for a change in leadership within the Pakistan team have surfaced. Speculation arose that Babar might announce his resignation upon returning to Pakistan, but the PCB's stance on the matter remains unclear. There are suggestions that Babar might face removal as captain due to his lackluster performance in the World Cup.

Babar's World Cup batting record has been under scrutiny, with no centuries, and most of his fifties coming in losing causes. Critics have pointed out his high number of dot balls and a below-par strike rate during the tournament.
