Shreyas Iyer Achieves 'Staggering World Cup Record' After Netherlands Ton

Shreyas Iyer's magnificent century against the Netherlands in India's last league stage encounter of the ICC World Cup 2023 on Sunday (November 12) in Bangalore solidified a special place for the earnest Mumbaikar in the record books.

Iyer became the first Indian middle-order player in the history of One-Day Internationals to have made 400 or more runs in a single edition of the World Cup. No one before the dependable right-hander had managed to surpass the 400-barrier from positions 4-7 at a men's World Cup in India colours over the past 48 years since the inaugural edition back in 1975.

Over the years, batting in the middle order has remained a stiff ask for Indian batters, who have been required to be extremely flexible and showcase skill, range and depth to withstand every possible situation and opposition attack.

Only five Indian batters in World Cup history had managed to produce 400 or more runs from positions 4-7. Iyer became the sixth with his terrific knock of 128 not out off 94 deliveries to help India push to a mammoth 410/4 in another commanding win and also only the first to reach the landmark at a single edition of the tournament.

Shreyas Iyer Bags Special Feat After Bangalore Century

Playing only his first World Cup in India jersey, the rising No.4 batter elevated his tally for the competition to 421 runs in just nine innings at a brilliant average of 70.16 and strike-rate of 106.58.

Notably, he is only 32 runs behind fifth-placed former captain Mohammed Azharuddin in the list of highest Indian middle-order World Cup scorers.

Azharuddin is positioned fifth with 453 runs after 21 matches and 17 innings under his belt. Placed above him in ascending order are legends Sachin Tendulkar (511), Kapil Dev (659), Yuvraj Singh (738) and numero uno MS Dhoni (780).

Iyer has a great chance to surpass Azharuddin's tally in the knock-outs stage of the ongoing World Cup and could even inch ahead of Tendulkar in the list of India's highest middle-order scorer at the quadrennial event.

The spots held by Kapil, Yuvraj and Dhoni maybe far for now but the consistent right-hander has plenty of years left in him to surpass the big-name trio.
