Virat Kohli's days under the sun as a successful all-format Indian captain maybe over but the legendary batter was acknowledged for his leadership qualities by Cricket Australia (CA) as the governing body named him as their captain for the team of the ICC World Cup 2023.

Despite experienced Indian opener Rohit Sharma emerging as a valiant leader with great impact with the bat and on the field, it was Kohli who pipped him to the captaincy tag in cricket.com.au's special playing XI named on Monday (November 13) for the ongoing tournament.

Since the Aussie board's playing XI couldn't shockingly find a spot for Rohit, who has been in spectacular touch with his 503 runs made in nine innings at a strike-rate above 121, the body bestowed the leadership mantle to his legendary teammate Kohli, who relinquished the captaincy crown at the fag end of 2021.

Kohli captained India across Tests, ODIs and T20Is over an influential seven-year period where he guided Indian cricket to great heights, especially in Tests, and inspired a fitness culture within the group with his remarkable standards.

The bonafide modern-day great forged one of the most successful ever tenures as Indian captain, winning 40 of the 68 Tests, 65 of the 97 ODIs and 30 of the 50 T20Is he led the Men In Blue in. The 34-year-old handed over the team's reigns to Rohit after the tour of South Africa in 2021-22 to kickstart a new era.

The ongoing World Cup 2023 has also seen Kohli reclimb great heights as India's mighty dependable No.3 batter. After enduring a dip in his productivity at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, Kohli has continued his renaissance year with an excellent run in the marquee tournament.

The 34-year-old is India's numero uno runs-getter after the end of the league stage with 594 runs in nine innings at an average of 99.00 while carrying a strike-rate of 88.52. The great batter has struck two centuries and five half-centuries over the course of the tournament.
