All signs are rife that the IPL 2024 could be the legendary Mahendra Singh Dhoni's last assignment in competitive cricket. The great Chennai Super Kings (CSK) wicketkeeper-batter handed over the captaincy reigns to young opener Ruturaj Gaikwad and is increasingly unlikely to appear in the yellow jersey the next season, when CSK will also be reconstructing their squad at the mega auction.

The 17th edition of the annual T20 carnival could thus prove to be a Dhoni celebratory fest for the man's passionate and widespread fanbase, including prominent faces in world cricket and the entertainment industry. One of Dhoni's marquee fans is legendary music director AR Rahman, who has promised to dedicate a special song of his for Chennai's proud adopted son.

In an interaction with host broadcasters Star Sports, Rahman said he will be singing the 'Nee Singham Dhan' song for CSK's beloved Thala at the IPL 2024 opening ceremony on Friday (March 22) before the defending champions host Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in their den.

Dhoni confirmed the end of his illustrious captaincy stint with the Super Kings by announcing a leadership handover to Gaikwad, who has earned the extra responsibility after emerging as one of the most consistent and bankable asset for the side since his first season in 2020.

It is understood Dhoni had been preparing Gaikwad to become the next captain of the side ever since IPL 2023 began by involving him in decision-making and giving him a say in the on-field matters, allowing the incumbent to grow into a leadership prospect.

The captaincy shift has also raised speculations that this could be Dhoni's last assignment in the IPL, with the 42-year-old hoping to end his career on a high with another trophy in his rich cabinet.
