Former Pakistan fast bowler Wahab Riaz is reportedly set to take on a new challenge as the head coach of the Pakistan women's cricket team. According to reports, the PCB is finalising his appointment, with an official announcement expected very soon.
The position opened after the end of Mohammad Wasim’s tenure, prompting the board to seek a fresh face to lead the women's side into its next phase of development.
Wahab Riaz to transition into handling Women’s cricket
According to Samaa TV, if his appointment is confirmed, Wahab Riaz will replace Mohammad Wasim and take charge before the women's team's upcoming international assignments.
His role will include preparing the side for key tournaments, improving consistency in performance, and nurturing young talent.
Interestingly, Wahab has no prior coaching experience. But he has been deeply involved with Pakistan cricket since his retirement.
He served as the senior team manager for the men's side and was also part of the national selection committee, giving him an inside view of team management and player development.
Reports also say Wahab Riaz has completed his Level 2 coaching certification, a mandatory qualification for coaching positions under PCB guidelines.
Pakistan Women has a disastrous World Cup run
The Pakistan women's cricket team had a tough ICC Women's World Cup 2025, starting with a heavy loss to the Bangladesh women's cricket team when they were bowled out for 129.
In a key match against India Women, Pakistan were beaten by 88 runs, extending India's unbeaten run to 12-0 in this rivalry.
Overall, with zero wins, four losses and three washouts, Pakistan Women finished at the bottom of the points table.
