Virat Kohli was snubbed from India A squad for the white-ball series against Australia A owing to a “communication gap”. Ravichandran Ashwin will reportedly feature in both, the BBL 2025-26 in Australia and in the IT20 2025-26 in UAE. In other news, the ECB has named the entire England squad for the 2025-26 Ashes Test series in Australia.
Capping an eventful day in the world of cricket, here we take a look at five of the biggest cricketing news that emerged out of Tuesday, September 23.
Virat Kohli snubbed from AUS A fixtures due to communication gap
Legendary Indian batter Virat Kohli was ruled out of India A squad for the upcoming three-match unofficial ODI series owing to a “communication gap” with chief selector Ajit Agarkar, as reported by Revsportz. Kohli recently underwent a fitness test in London and is being prepping up, possibly for Team India’s white-ball tour of Australia. Since the cricketer has already retired from Tests and T20Is, Kohli’s snub from India A home fixtures also casts a doubt over his willingness to appear in the 2027 ODI World Cup for Team India.
Ravichandran Ashwin to play in BBL and ILT20 2026
Former Indian all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin is set to feature in the upcoming BBL 2025-26 season in Australia as well as in the ILT20 2026 season in the UAE. The legendary off-spinner recently confirmed his retirement from IPL cricket, thus making himself eligible for participating in overseas T20 leagues. As per reports, Ravichandran Ashwin has already received offers from multiple BBL franchises like Sydney Sixers, Sydney Thunder, Hobart Hurricanes and from Adelaide Strikers. He is also registered for the upcoming ILT20 2025 auction set to be organised on October 1 in a couple of weeks.
Harry Brook appointed as Stokes’ deputy as England name Ashes 2025 squad
The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has named a 16-player England squad for the upcoming five-match Ashes Test series in Australia later this year. While Ben Stokes will continue to lead the team as captain, white-ball skipper Harry Brook has been named as his new deputy. The team also features several star attractions as well as senior pros in the form of Jofra Archer, Joe Root, Ben Duckett among others. Fast bowler Chris Woakes has been ruled out of the side as he is yet to recover from his shoulder injury.
In addition, the ECB also named England’s entire ODI and T20I squad for the upcoming tour of New Zealand.
Rahul Chahar joins Surrey for final County Championship match
India leg-spinner Rahul Chahar has joined the Surrey cricket club for their upcoming County Championship Division One fixture against Hampshire in Southampton between September 24 and September 27. The 26-year-old was registered to represent Surrey earlier this month itself but was not required to play in the club’s home matches against Warwickshire and Nottinghamshire. Nonetheless, Surrey’s upcoming away match against Hampshire will also mark their final County Championship game of the season.
Heather Graham to replace Grace Harris in Australia WC squad
Legendary all-rounder Grace Harris has been ruled out of Australia Women squad from the upcoming 2025 ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup in India and Sri Lanka owing to a calf injury she recently sustained in the ODI series against India Women. Cricket Australia has now named fellow all-rounder Heather Graham as a replacement player for the tournament. Heather last played an ODI match for Australia Women back in October 2019 during a home series against Sri Lanka Women in Brisbane.
