Virat Kohli once again struggled to put up a run against Australia in the ongoing three-match series. His teammate Rohit Sharma became India’s third highest run-maker through his fighting half-century. In other news, senior Pakistan batter Babar Azam has been called back into the national T20I squad.

Capping an eventful day in the world of cricket, here we take a look at five of the biggest cricketing news that emerged out of Thursday, October 23.

Smriti Mandhana, Pratika Rawal pile up records in IND vs NZ

Smriti Mandhana became the world’s leading run-maker as an opener in Women’s ODIs, going past New Zealand opener Suzie Bates. Mandhana achieved the feat by cracking 109 off 95 balls against New Zealand Women in match 24 of the 2025 ICC World Cup in Navi Mumbai. Her opening partner Pratika Rawal, meanwhile, compiled 122 off 134 balls in the same innings, and became the joint-fastest cricketer in the world to complete 1,000 runs in Women’s ODIs. Rawal completed 1,000 runs in just 23 innings to beat Nicole Bolton and Meg Lanning.

Babar Azam, Naseem in PAK squad for T20I series

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has named Pakistan squads for the upcoming T20I and ODI series against South Africa. In a major development, the PCB has recalled senior batter Babar Azam and young fast bowling maverick Naseem Shah back into the T20I setup after nearly a year. While Pakistan’s T20I team will be helmed by regular skipper and star all-rounder Salman Agha, senior fast bowler Shaheen Shah Afridi will be taking over as Pakistan’s new ODI captain as a replacement of experienced wicketkeeper-batter Mohammad Rizwan.

PAK slip on WTC standings as Simon Harmer headlines SA win

South Africa obliterated Pakistan by eight wickets on Day 4 of the second Test in Rawalpindi to level the two-match series 1-1. Simon Harmer picked up six wickets in the second Pakistan innings to claim figures of 6-50, thus setting up a paltry 68-run target for the visitors. In response, Ryan Rickelton notched up the winning runs for the Proteas as the defending champions opened their account on the WTC 2025-27 standings. Pakistan, on the other hand, slipped to number five on the nine-team points table.

Virat Kohli attains unwanted record with duck vs AUS

Senior Indian batter Virat Kohli got trapped in front by Xavier Bartlett for a four-ball duck in the second ODI of the three-match series against Australia in Adelaide. Kohli’s latest failure also marked his second successive duck this series, thus extending his dreadful scoreless tally to 40 ducks in international cricket for Team India. In doing so, the legendary Indian batter has now levelled with ex-Delhi and national teammate as well as tailender Ishant Sharma. As of now, only legendary fast bowler and 2011 World Cup winner Zaheer Khan (43) is holding more ducks than Virat Kohli in international colours.

Rohit Sharma surpasses Ganguly among India’s ODI run-makers

Rohit Sharma punched out a fighting 73 off 97 balls against Australia in the second ODI at the Adelaide Oval. Through the course of his knock, the legendary opener also became India’s third highest run-maker in ODIs, thus going past former captain Sourav Ganguly. Rohit Sharma’s ODI tally currently stands at 11,249 runs from 267 innings at a prolific average of 48.69 to find himself only behind Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli. The former skipper also became the first Indian cricketer to aggregate over 1,000 runs in ODI matches played in Australia.
