Shubman Gill retained his number one spot on the latest ICC ODI rankings. Kagiso Rabada frustrated Pakistan bowlers by unfurling a record knock at number 11 on Day 3. In other news, Annabel Sutherland and Ashleigh Gardner stamped Australia’s dominance over England this 2025 ICC Women’s World Cup.

Capping an eventful day in the world of cricket, here we take a look at five of the biggest cricketing news that emerged out of Wednesday, October 22.

LPL 2025 postponed by Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has postponed the upcoming 2025 edition of the Lanka Premier League (LPL). The cricket board confirmed the same on Wednesday, October 22 and stated that they will be shifting the season to a “more suitable window” in a bid to give themselves breathing space for renovating venues for next year’s 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. The renovation work at the iconic R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo is already put on halt to host the 2025 ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup matches.

Chris Woakes renews Warwickshire contract

Former England fast bowler and star all-rounder Chris Woakes has penned a two-year extension deal with the Warwickshire cricket club. Confirming the deal just a few weeks after announcing his retirement from international cricket, Woakes will now be associated with the club for two more seasons across all three formats. His renewed stint will also help Woakes to extend his Warwickshire association beyond 20 years, considering he first joined the club back in 2006 as a teenager. It is worth noting that the 36-year-old recently confirmed his retirement after he was snubbed from England’s Ashes 2025-26 plans in Australia later this year.

Kagiso Rabada frustrates PAK with record knock on Day 3

South Africa fast bowler Kagiso Rabada punched out his career-best score of 71 from 61 balls against Pakistan on Day 3 of the series-deciding second Test match at Rawalpindi. The cricketer launched four sixes and four fours to crack the highest individual score at number 11 by any South African batter in history, and the fifth highest overall, thus frustrating Pakistan bowlers in the process. Rabada’s late heroics also lifted South Africa from 306-9 to 404 all out as the visitors took an unlikely lead of 71 runs before stumps.

Shubman Gill still on top of ICC ODI rankings

India’s newly appointed captain Shubman Gill retained his number one spot on the latest ICC rankings for ODI batters. The cricketer recently scored just 10 against Australia in the series-opening first ODI match at Perth before falling to Nathan Ellis. At the moment, Gill finds himself placed at the top of the rankings with 768 rating points, i.e., four points higher than second-placed Afghanistan batter Ibrahim Zadran. Apart from Shubman Gill, his teammates Rohit Sharma (third), Virat Kohli (fifth) and Shreyas Iyer (tenth) are the only other Indian players in the top 10 ICC ODI rankings for batters.

Sutherland, Gardner maintain Australia’s unbeaten crusade

Australian all-rounders Annabel Sutherland and Ashleigh Gardner crafted a huge 180-run partnership for the fifth wicket to hunt down England’s 244-run total with six wickets and nearly 10 overs intact in match number 23 of the 2025 ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup in Indore. Sutherland unpacked 98* off 112 balls in the run-chase while Gardner clattered 104* off just 73 with 16 elegant boundaries. Earlier in the game, the two cricketers also picked up five wickets between them with the ball, with Sutherland claiming figures of 3-60 from her 10 overs.
