Smriti Mandhana continues to scale new batting heights for Team India Women in the year 2025. After becoming the first women batter in ODI history to aggregate over 1,000 runs in a single calendar year, the seasoned opener has become the leading six-hitter in a 12-month period. The cricketer achieved the latter of the two feats during her sensational ton against New Zealand at the 2025 ICC Women’s World Cup.
Celebrating Smriti Mandhana’s landmark feat, here is a look at five players with the highest number sixes to their names in a single year in Women’s ODI history.
5. Chamari Athapaththu – 21 sixes in 2023
Sri Lanka captain Chamari Athapaththu launched 21 sixes throughout the year 2023 to account nearly a third of her runs through maximums. The legendary all-rounder played just eight ODI innings in the entire 12-month period, and aggregated 415 runs in the process at a prolific batting average of 69.16. Athapaththu’s six-hitting frenzy in 2023 also helped her maintain a staggering batting strike rate of 125.37, the highest she has held in any year in ODIs, also marking way higher than her career ODI strike rate of 75.31.
4. Chloe Tryon – 21 sixes in 2017
South Africa all-rounder Chloe Tryon has blasted 73 sixes in her ODI career, ever since she made her format debut back in October 2011. Remarkably, Tryon listed 21 of those sixes in a single year, doing so during her prolific run in 2017. In 16 ODI innings spanning 20 games for South Africa Women, the then 23-year-old clattered 35 fours and 21 sixes and accrued 415 runs at a strike rate of 115.27. Tryon also punched out three half-centuries, including one at the 2017 Women’s ICC Cricket World Cup in England.
3. Deandra Dottin – 21 sixes in 2013
Legendary West Indies all-rounder Deandra Dottin dispatched 21 sixes in 21 ODI matches of the calendar year 2013. The hard-hitting batter also smeared 49 fours to aggregate 70 boundaries in the entire 12-month phase. Dottin was also in exceptional touch with the bat for the West Indies that year, considering she compiled 463 runs in 19 innings at a strike rate of 83.87. Marking her best year in ODIs in terms of number of sixes hit, Deandra Dottin’s next best annual performance occurred in 2011 when she hit 13 sixes in 12 innings.
2. Lizelle Lee – 28 sixes in 2017
Former South Africa cricketer Lizelle Lee was at the peak of her batting prowess in the year 2017. With 70 sixes in Women’s ODIs throughout her decade-long career, Lee unpacked 28 of those maximums in 2017 from just 21 innings, including 12 at the 2017 ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup in England. Overall, she accrued 717 runs in just 21 innings at an average of 35.85 and with an astonishing batting strike rate of 116.01, plundering five half-centuries in the process. Lizelle Lee also struck 14 sixes the year before, and 13 a year later to gather 55 ODI maximums in the three-year period from 2016 to 2018.
1. Smriti Mandhana – 31 sixes in 2025
Prolific Indian opener Smriti Mandhana has hauled 31 sixes so far in the ongoing calendar year 2025 in just 20 innings. The cricketer soared past Lizelle Lee’s 2017 Women’s ODI tally of 28 sixes by launching four maximums during her blistering century against New Zealand Women in Navi Mumbai at the 2025 ICC Women’s World Cup. Interestingly, Mandhana’s 2025 tally of ODI sixes marks nearly half of her career ODI maximums (73).
With 1,259 runs, the Indian vice-captain also shattered the record of scoring the highest number of runs in a single calendar year.
