Former Indian hockey player Vece Paes has passed away at the age of 80 following a prolonged illness at a local hospital. He was suffering from an advanced stage of Parkinson’s disease.
Apart from winning the bronze medal for the Indian hockey team at the 1972 Munich Olympics and at the 1971 Hockey World Cup in Barcelona, Paes also served as a medical consultant for the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
Asian Cricket Council Consultant Passes Away
Vece Paes, father of Indian tennis icon Leander Paes has passed away owing to a prolonged illness. Having suffered from Parkinson’s disease, he is survived by his wife Jennifer Paes and son Leander.
Apart from excelling on the field for Indian hockey, Vece Paes also had a run-in with cricket. For starters, he served as a medical consultant for the BCCI, working in the board’s anti-doping department and age verification programs for several years. He also once served as the President of the Calcutta Cricket and Football Club.
Owing to his doctorate in sports medicine, Vece Paes also gained wide recognition for his work with the Asian Cricket Council (ACC), where he managed anti-doping education programmes and shaped medical protocols that left a lasting impact on the sport.
Hockey India reflected on his passing as a sombre day for Indian sport. Taking to their social media accounts, the Hockey India praised Paes for his passion and dedication towards Indian sports and for inspiring generations through his sporting achievements.
Notably, the BCCI is yet to post a tribute in honor of Vece Paes on their social media.
