UP Warriorz to reveal captain on Monday [Source: @thecricketwood/x.com]
The Women’s Premier League 2026 season is set to commence on January 9, as five teams will fight it out for the glory. The Mumbai Indians are the defending champions, and they assembled a strong squad in the mega auction. However, there was another team that built a strong core for the 2026 campaign - UP Warriorz.
Before the mega auction, the side retained only a solitary player as they entered the auction with the highest purse amongst all teams. The franchise bought 17 players, but now their biggest headache begins - who will be the captain of the side for WPL 2026?.
UP Warriorz to reveal their captain on 'this date'
With just a week left before the season commences, there is an update on the UP Warriorz captaincy announcement. According to TOI correspondent Gaurav Gupta, the franchise will reveal their new captain on Monday, February 5. The decision has been made, but an official announcement will take place on Monday.
The team has assembled players from different nations and they have a plethora of captaincy options before the season commences as the side aims to win their maiden WPL title in 2026.
The candidates who can become Warriorz captain
The franchise invested smartly in the mega auction, and as a result, they have plenty of options to choose from for their captaincy. The leading candidate is the former Australian skipper, Meg Lanning. She has been the most successful Women’s international captain, and the Aussie legend has the experience of leading Delhi Capitals in the WPL.
Moreover, she led the Capitals to three back-to-back finals, and has the big-game experience the franchise demands.
There is also Deepti Sharma, who is in the race for captaincy. She led the Warriorz last season, but her stint as a leader was underwhelming. There is also the England star, Sophie Ecclestone, who is known for her shrewd and tactical mind and could be a smart option if the team aims to appoint a young leader.
The best choice to lead the Warriorz in WPL 2026
If the Warriorz are looking for a short-term option, with no long-term vision, then Lanning is the best option. She has led Australia to multiple World Cups and has been a successful WPL captain.
However, since this is an Indian league, making an Indian captain makes logical sense. Deepti Sharma has been one of India’s best players in 2025, and she also has the leadership qualities that has not been tapped yet. Hence, if a team is looking an Indian skipper, then Deepti is the answer.
