The SA20 clash between the Durban’s Super Giants and the Joburg Super Kings ended in an enthralling Super over finish as the Super Kings prevailed in a close-fought contest that went down to the wire. DSG needed 206 runs to win the match, and they almost achieved the impossible, as the scores were level on the last ball of the game.

The side was one hit away from a famous run-chase, but this is when the Super Kings' keeper, Donovan Ferreira came to life and produced a last-minute run-out that took the game to the Super over and the Yellow Army eventually won the contest.

Super Giants needed just a single to clinch the win, but on the last ball, Wiaan Mulder deliberately bowled on the fifth stump line as the batter failed to get a bat to it. Ferreira had the presence of mind, as even before the last ball was delivered, he had removed his right gloves, and when Simon Harmer missed the shot on the last ball, he ran towards the ball, collected it swiftly and aimed at the stumps as the non striker was run-out in the blink of an eye.

This last-minute run-out gave Joburg Super Kings a crucial win, and after the game ended, skipper Faf du Plessis applauded the keeper, while also mentioning that the run-out effort reminded him of MS Dhoni, who did a similar feat against Bangladesh in the 2016 T20 World Cup.

"I remember a game long time ago when MS Dhoni was behind the stumps for India. I think it was against Bangladesh in a World Cup and I remember, the guy bowled a cut ball across him and that memory was in the back of my head," Faf stated.

The famous MS Dhoni run-out that won India a do-or-die game

It was the 2016 T20 World Cup, and after losing to New Zealand in the opening match, India defeated Pakistan to stay alive in the race for a semifinal berth. However, against Bangladesh, the batting lineup struggled as India only managed 146 in their 20 overs.

Just like the Durban’s Super Giants, Bangladesh had also almost achieved the target as the side needed 2 runs to clinch a famous win. On the last ball, Hardik Pandya bowled well outside the off as the batter missed his shot and Dhoni ran quickly to dislodge the bails as the non striker had no time to make his ground.

Almost 10 years later, Ferreira recreated the same moment and this is what Faf du Plessis remembered after witnessing a sensational run-out.
