New Zealand wicketkeeper-batter Tom Latham has been a vital cog in their team in the past few years, with exceptional performances for his country. The left-hander has often produced excellent results with the bat, unlike this time, when he has registered himself on one of the most embarrassing record list.

Latham Registers Unwanted Record

During the second ODI of the ongoing tri-series in Pakistan, South Africa batted first and posted 304 on the board after the conclusion of their 50 overs. Matthew Breetzke, on debut, scored a magnificent 150. In reply, New Zealand started very well, reaching 237 when they lost their second wicket. However, they lost their third wicket quickly, and that's when middle-order batter Tom Latham came to the crease.

Unfortunately, he couldn't spend much time in the middle and was dismissed on the very first delivery he faced from Senuran Muthusamy, caught in front of the stumps. The umpire initially gave it not out, but South Africa were adamant about their appeal and went upstairs immediately. Replays showed no bat or glove involved as the ball hit the off stump on the tracker. This prompted the on-field umpire to overturn his decision, and Latham returned to the pavilion with zero written after his name.

This was the second consecutive wicket for South Africa, after previously dismissing Daryl Mitchell on the ball before this. Regardless, this did not have much impact on the game as the Kiwis eased the chase, courtesy of veteran Kane Williamson, who remained unbeaten on 133*, and Devon Conway's 97 proved effective as they chased down 305 with eight deliveries and six wickets to spare.

Apart from all this, the major highlight was Latham's golden duck against the Proteas. Digging further into this, his previous two scores have also been ducks, with one coming against Sri Lanka in the last bilateral series, while in the previous game against Pakistan, he again couldn't get off the mark.

He now has three consecutive ducks in the scorecards, putting him on an embarrassing record list with players having the most successive ducks in ODI cricket.

Latham is joint-second on the list with three ducks, sharing the record with the game's greats, Sachin Tendulkar and Ricky Ponting, while also having India's dynamic middle-order batter Suryakumar Yadav. He is now just one duck away from being at the top of the list.
