Rising star Tilak Varma became one of the five retention choices made by the Mumbai Indians franchise ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction. On October 31, the 22-year-old was retained by the Mumbai Indians team management alongside the likes of franchise veterans Rohit Sharma, captain Hardik Pandya, Jasprit Bumrah and Suryakumar Yadav.
Here, we take a look at the exact IPL 2025 cost of Tilak Varma, and compare the same with his previous salaries in the IPL.
What is Tilak Varma IPL 2025 cost?
Tilak Varma was first acquired by the Mumbai Indians franchise for the IPL 2022, back when the cricketer was just 19 years old. His maiden IPL pay cheque was valued Rs.1.7 crores. He was retained by the team management for each of the subsequent two seasons, i.e., IPL 2023 and IPL 2024, once again for Rs.1.7 crores each.
However, Varma’s consistent run with the bat for the franchise seems to have elevated his stocks, as he was retained for nearly five times his previous value for the 2025 edition of the tournament. On October 31, it was confirmed that the Mumbai Indians franchise acquired him as their fifth retention choice, doing so for a sum of Rs.8 crores.
Combining all four of his IPL pay cheques, Tilak Varma has so far garnered Rs.13.1 crores from the Mumbai Indians franchise owners.
He made his debut in IPL 2022 and went on to play all 14 league matches under the leadership of decorated captain Rohit Sharma. Hauling 397 runs in the process at a strike rate of over 130, Varma turned out to be Mumbai Indians’ second highest run-maker of the season after blistering wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan.
The following season during IPL 2023, the youngster scored his runs at an even quicker pace and a better average, tallying 343 of them from just 11 innings at an average of 42.87 and with a strike rate of 164.11. Earlier this year during the 2024 season, the Hyderabadi batter unleashed 416 runs at a strike rate of nearly 150, and fell just a run short of Rohit Sharma from becoming the season’s highest scorer for the Mumbai Indians.
So far in his IPL career, Tilak Varma has played 38 matches for the Mumbai Indians and has minted 1,156 runs with an average of 39.86 and a strike rate of 146.32, listing six blistering half-centuries in the process.
