Thiruvananthapuram's Greenfield Stadium is likely to step in as a venue for the upcoming ICC Women's World Cup following RCB's home ground, Chinnaswamy Stadium's rejection. This shift comes after Chinnaswamy Stadium was stripped of its hosting rights, including the potential final, due to safety concerns.
The Karnataka government revoked permission for major events at Chinnaswamy Stadium after a fatal stampede outside the venue on June 4 claimed 11 lives during IPL celebrations.
Chinnaswamy Stadium Declared 'Unsafe'
A subsequent government-commissioned probe led by Justice John Michael D’Cunha declared Chinnaswamy Stadium "fundamentally unsafe" for large crowds, impacting other tournaments like the KSCA Maharaja T20 Trophy.
This development led ICC chairman Jay Shah to meet with Kerala Cricket Association (KCA) president K Jayesh earlier this week. Shah posed the question, “Are you ready to take over as the host?” Jayesh responded affirmatively, “We assured him that Thiruvananthapuram is ready to host the Women’s World Cup matches. We have the necessary infrastructure in place,” as covered by a report in TOI.
While expressing optimism, Jayesh clarified that an official confirmation from the ICC is still pending. “It’s not yet confirmed how many matches we will host. We are waiting for the ICC’s nod and several logistical challenges still need to be addressed,” he added.
India Women Set For World Cup Voyage
The KCA now awaits final word on how many of Bengaluru's originally allotted four matches Thiruvananthapuram will stage. Notably, the Women's World Cup is set to begin on September 30 with the final scheduled for November 2.
The India Women will begin their campaign with the first home game on September 30 against Sri Lanka Women and will end their group stage campaign on October 26 against Bangladesh Women.
