Bangladesh's cricketing stalwart, Tamim Iqbal, has been notably omitted from the Bangladesh Cricket Board's (BCB) central contracts list for the year 2024. This exclusion has raised questions about Tamim's role and future participation in the national team, especially after a stormy year highlighted by a brief retirement and a fallout with the cricketing authority.

Bangladesh cricket faces new era as Tamim Iqbal misses 2024 central contracts

Tamim Iqbal, a name that resonates with Bangladesh cricket's many successes over the years, found himself in a tornado of controversy in July last year when he announced his retirement from international cricket. The decision, however, was short-lived, as Tamim reversed his retirement less than 24 hours later, following a persuasive conversation with Bangladesh's Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Despite relinquishing his captaincy and declaring his availability for the World Cup 2023, Tamim's relationship with the BCB has been a rollercoaster, culminating in his exclusion from the 2024 central contracts list.

The BCB's announcement did not directly address Tamim's exclusion, leaving room for speculation about his potential comeback, particularly in ODIs and Tests. Yet, the omission is a clear indicator that the board might be looking beyond the veteran opener for its future plans. In the meantime, Tamim had hinted at making an announcement regarding his international career during the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL).

While Tamim's future remains uncertain, the BCB has moved forward, awarding national contracts to 21 cricketers for 2024. Notably, Shoriful Islam and the newly appointed captain, Najmul Hossain Shanto, have been awarded all-format deals that highlight their importance in Bangladesh's cricketing framework. Taskin Ahmed, who previously held a triple contract, now finds himself with an ODI and T20I deal, following a request to the BCB not to consider him for Test cricket due to injury management.

The exclusion of Tamim Iqbal, alongside Ebadot Hossain, Afif Hossain, and Mosaddek Hossain, from the central contracts signifies a period of transition for Bangladesh cricket. New talents such as Towhid Hridoy, Tanzim Hasan, Mahmudul Hasan Joy, Naeem Hasan, and Nurul Hasan have been included, indicating the BCB's intent to build for the future.

As Bangladesh cricket continues to evolve, the absence of Tamim Iqbal from the central contract list marks the end of an era and the beginning of a new chapter, one that the veteran opener's legion of fans will watch with great anticipation.
