In a dramatic low-scoring affair, South Africa clinched a six-wicket victory over Sri Lanka in Match 4 of the T20 World Cup 2024 at Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York on Monday.

Sri Lanka, after electing to bat first, faltered spectacularly, failing to counter the formidable South African bowling lineup and collapsing to a meager 77 all out. Only three Sri Lankan batsmen managed to reach double figures in a dismal batting display.

Despite Sri Lanka's valiant bowling effort, which claimed four South African wickets, the modest target proved too small to defend. South Africa overcame the early challenges to secure the win with six wickets in hand, starting their tournament campaign on a positive note.

Here’s the timeline of how SL vs SA panned out in New York.

SL vs SA Highlights: Early Turmoil as Nissanka and Mendis Struggle

Sri Lankan skipper Wanindu Hasaranga's decision to bat first against the Proteas backfired spectacularly, as the South African bowlers made early inroads. Openers Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Mendis found themselves in troubled waters, barely making a dent in the scoreboard.

Nissanka, in an attempt to break free from the constraints, fell cheaply for just 3 runs in the fourth over to debutant Ottneil Baartman as Sri Lanka reached 24/1 at the end of the powerplay.

SL vs SA Highlights: Middle Order Meltdown and Tailend Collapse

The pitch offered extra bite, further troubling the Sri Lankan batters who looked like deer in headlights. Kamindu tried to accelerate but ended up falling for 11 to Anrich Nortje. Hasaranga's gamble to promote himself up the order did not pay off, as he was stumped for a silver duck.

Keshav Maharaj then turned the screws tighter, dismissing Sadeera Samarawickrama for a golden duck. Kusal Mendis' laborious innings was cut short by Nortje at 19 runs from 30 balls, and the middle order continued to crumble.

Angelo Mathews and Dasun Shanaka showed brief signs of resistance, adding a quick 23 runs, but it was not enough to turn the tide. Mathews was dismissed for 16, leading to a quick wrap-up of the tail, with Sri Lanka folding for a paltry 77 in 19.1 overs.

SL vs SA Highlights: Early Jitters for Hendricks and Markram

The Proteas' chase got off to a dismal start. Reeza Hendricks (4) was sent packing early in the second over by Nuwan Thushara, and the trouble doubled when skipper Aiden Markram followed soon after as he fell to Dasun Shanaka for 12 .

The Lankan bowlers exploited the conditions expertly, putting South Africa on the back foot with the scoreboard reading 27/2 after the powerplay.

SL vs SA Highlights: Stubbs and de Kock Grind Through

Amidst the top-order turmoil, Tristan Stubbs dug in his heels, facing 28 deliveries for a hard-earned 13 runs before succumbing to Wanindu Hasaranga. De Kock held on end and managed to hit a six off Mathews.

However, Hasaranga continued his tight spell, also dismissing de Kock who managed to scrape together 20 runs from 27 balls. The duo's struggle highlighted the difficulties posed by the pitch and Sri Lanka’s spirited defense.

SL vs SA Highlights: Klaasen Exudes Calmness

In a tense scenario, Heinrich Klaasen stood out with his composed unbeaten 19 off 22 balls. His timely hits—a four and a six—proved crucial in steering South Africa towards the finish line.

Klaasen's calm amidst the storm helped the Proteas secure the win, crossing the threshold in the 17th over with six wickets in hand, clinching a hard-fought victory.
