In a historic day for Afghanistan cricket, Rashid Khan and his troops beat a mighty and undefeated Australian side in T20 World Cup to register their first ever victory against the Aussies and fans on Twitter were stunned yet excited to witness AFG’s resilience.

The 2024 T20 World Cup witnessed a major upset as Afghanistan beat Australia by 21 runs to strengthen their position in Group 1 of the Super 8 round. Australia, who were undefeated  entering the contest, restricted AFG to 148 runs in the first innings.

Everything seemed fine until Gulbadin and Naveen Ul Haq crippled the Aussies’ top order. After Naveen struck in the powerplay to dismiss Travis Head and Mitchell Marsh, Gulbadin neutralised the middle order threat with a four-wicket haul. Afghanistan saw an opening and bowled tight spells to inflate the required rate.

For the first time in this tournament, Australia succumbed to pressure and fell short of 21 runs in 149 runs chase to award Afghanistan their first ever victory against them in international cricket.

Rashid Khan and his boys were jubilant and so were the cricket fans on Twitter who hailed Afghanistan for their passion, resilience and incredible performance on the field.

Wasim Jaffer opined that calling this an upset would be disrespectful to Afghanistan as they simply deserved to win. AFG are not underdogs anymore, and their dominance in the ongoing T20 World Cup is a serious testament to the notion.

Notably, Afghanistan has simplified its semi-final qualifying equation and pushed Australia to a probable disqualification. If India beats Australia on Monday, Pat Cummins and Co would have to pack their bags and witness Afghanistan steer into the semis.
