Afghanistan is playing Uganda in the fifth match of the T20 World Cup 2024. This game is being played at the Providence Stadium in Guyana.

Uganda won the toss in the match and invited Afghanistan to bat first. Notably, this is the debut T20 World Cup for Uganda and it was evident from their bowling effort. Afghanistan's opening duo of Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran steamrolled the bowlers and set the platform for a huge total.

Gurbaz-Zadran Miss Out On A Record

Rahmanullah Gurbaz was on the fifth gear from the start of the innings. Ibrahim Zadran, on the other hand, started slow but caught up with his partner as the innings progressed. The duo were marching on nicely and it looked there was not enough potency in the Ugandan bowling attack to break the parnership.

The duo was well on course to break the highest opening partnership in a T20 World Cup match. This record belongs to the English pair of Jos Buttler and Alex Hales. They scored 170 unbeaten runs against India in the semi-final of T20 World Cup 2022. However, it was not desined for the Afghan batters to get themselves registered in the record books.

In the 15th over of the innings, the Ugandan skipper, Brian Masaba got the wicket of Ibrahim Zadran (70 off 46). The partnership at that stage worked 154 runs and was just 17 runs away from acheiving the record.

However, this was the best partnership between the two batters and the highest for Afghanistan in the T20 World Cup.

Here is a look at the top opening partnerships in T20 World Cups.
