Mumbai Indians (MI) star batter Suryakumar Yadav has encountered a setback as the National Cricket Academy (NCA) has yet to approve his participation in the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL). This means he will be sidelined for the initial few games of the season.

This poses a considerable setback for the five-time IPL champions, given their existing roster of injured players. Both Gerald Coetzee and Dilshan Madushanka are uncertain for the first match.

Jason Behrendorff's withdrawal from the tournament due to injury compounds Mumbai Indians' challenges. Now, with reports of SKY's potential absence for the first few games, MI's concerns deepen.

As per the latest update from Cricbuzz, the NCA management has reportedly withheld clearance, preventing Suryakumar from fulfilling his IPL commitments with Mumbai Indians at this time.

Consequently, Suryakumar will undoubtedly miss the opening match. Mumbai Indians are scheduled to face the Gujarat Titans on March 24 in Ahmedabad.

The magnitude of this setback for Suryakumar is evident from his recent social media post. In the post, he shared a heartbreak emoji, expressing his disappointment.

Suryakumar is currently recuperating from an ankle injury and has not played any cricket since December 2023. He sustained an ankle injury during the T20I series against South Africa and recently underwent a sports hernia operation.

According to a PTI report, the National Cricket Academy (NCA) has not yet confirmed Suryakumar's availability for the first two games of IPL 2024. He awaits clearance from the NCA and once obtained, he will join the team under the supervision of the MI medical staff.

"Surya's rehabilitation is progressing well, and he is expected to return to action during the IPL itself. However, it remains uncertain whether the NCA's Sports Science and Medical Team will grant clearance for the first two away games against Gujarat Titans and Sunrisers Hyderabad (March 27),"  a BCCI source stated.

Recently, MI head coach Mark Boucher provided an update on Suryakumar's injury but refrained from disclosing whether he had received approval from the BCCI's medical staff.

Suryakumar has been a vital member of the MI squad for the past six seasons, and the team management is eager for his swift recovery to see him light up the IPL stage once again in blue and gold.
