In a revolutionary move to speed up T20 games, IPL authorities will reportedly bring in a ‘Smart Replay System’ in the impending season to ensure faster and accurate DRS referral decisions.

IPL 2024 is just around the corner, and ahead of the brand-new edition, IPL authorities are likely to revamp the DRS referral procedure. As per a report from ESPN Cricinfo, a new amendment called ‘Smart Replay System’ will be introduced this year in IPL, which will ideally assist TV umpires in making faster and more accurate review decisions.

Under this new system, the communication bridge between the TV umpire and HawkEye operator, who used to be the TV broadcast head earlier, will be eliminated from the picture. A TV umpire can directly ask for necessary camera angles as he pleases with the Hawk-Eye operator.

Besides, earlier HawkEye cameras were only used for Ultraedge and ball tracking. But now, the umpires can seek HawkEye lenses for stumping and clean catch referrals as well.

In another important update, TV Umpire will be provided with split-screen views and additional camera angles for conclusive evidence of, for example, a low-end catch or run-out appeal.

Importantly, if the TV Umpire sees a clear gap between the bat and ball in LBW review appeals, he could directly proceed to ball tracking and not seek an Ultraedge review.

These amendments will ensure the DRS reviews sums up faster which will in turn help to conclude the IPL games in the designated time slots.

ESPN Cricinfo further reported that the BCCI conducted a two-day workshop to select 15 umpires, comprising both local and foreign personalities, who will work with this new replay system this IPL season.
