Sunil Gavaskar Names Perfect Replacement In GT's Camp After Hardik Pandya's Exit

Former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar believes Gujarat Titans head coach Ashish Nehra will be holding the team’s steering wheel in the upcoming IPL 2024 season. A couple of months ago, the franchise announced young batting maverick Shubman Gill as their new skipper, after Hardik Pandya had opted himself out of the team to join Mumbai Indians.

Gavaskar claimed that while it is difficult to pre-determine if Gill would have the same impact for Gujarat Titans like Pandya did during his two-year leadership stint, he did back the youngster owing to his splendid batting form in prior IPL seasons.


Sunil Gavaskar signifies Nehra’s GT influence

Legendary Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar believes Gujarat Titans will once again qualify for the playoffs, this time under the leadership duo of head coach Ashish Nehra and newly-appointed captain Shubman Gill.

The cricketer-turned-commentator also signified the importance of Nehra, claiming that the former speedster will be “holding the reins” of the team to guide Gill in the absence of Hardik Pandya. 

“Ashish Nehra will be the one who will be holding the reins. With Ashish Nehra holding the reins and guiding Shubman Gill, I won't be surprised if the Gujarat Titans once again get into the top four," Sunil Gavaskar said on Star Sports.

Gavaskar also believes batting prodigy Shubman Gill will be able to lead the team well on his captaincy debut, as the youngster was in splendid touch with the bat last year. According to the former cricketer, players performing well tend to lead the team a lot better. He added:

“Shubman Gill, young cricketer, it's difficult to say whether he would be able to have the same impact that Hardik Pandya had. Shubman Gill was in unbelievable form last year himself. When a captain is in such good form, he is able to lead also a lot better," the former Indian captain added.

Back in November 2023 on IPL 2024 auction day, Shubman Gill became one of the 17 retentions made by the Gujarat Titans franchise alongside David Warner, Wriddhiman Saha, Kane Williamson and IPL cult hero Rahul Tewatia among others.

The following month, the Titans management made new recruits in the form of Umesh Yadav, Shahrukh Khan and Azmatullah Omarzai. As Shubman Gill and co. brace themselves for the upcoming IPL 2024 season, here is a look at their entire squad composition for the tournament.
