Chennai-based media powerhouse, Sun TV Network is all set to spread its wings even wider in the world of cricket by acquiring Northern Superchargers, one of the teams in The Hundred, a fast-paced limited-overs tournament backed by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB). The deal, worth a massive £100.5 million (over ₹1,161 crore), marks Sun TV’s official entry into the England and Wales Premier League ecosystem.
Sun TV Joins The Hundred With Big-Money Deal for Northern Superchargers
Once the acquisition is wrapped up, Northern Superchargers Limited will become a 100% wholly-owned subsidiary of Sun TV Network.
Sun TV isn’t new to the cricketing franchise game. It already owns Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL and Sunrisers Eastern Cape in South Africa’s SA20 league, both part of its growing sports portfolio led by Kavya Maran, daughter of founder Kalanithi Maran. Now, they have added a shiny new piece to the puzzle with this major overseas buy.
The media company confirmed the move in a statement to the National Stock Exchange, saying,
“We are enhancing our global footprint into sports and are investing into a club that is part of The Hundred.”
They also added that the London-registered franchise is already profitable and well-positioned to ride the growing global wave of limited-overs cricket fandom.
A Steep Price For Long-Term Play
The price tag may raise eyebrows as the deal is reportedly happening at 53 times the club’s FY24 revenue of £1.89 million (around ₹22 crore). But with profit already on the table and The Hundred slowly building its brand, Sun TV clearly sees big upside potential.
The acquisition is expected to close by December 31, 2025, giving the Chennai-headquartered broadcaster time to integrate and strategize before the next big push.
Sun TV Joins The Elite Club Of Indian Global Franchise Owners
With this move, Sun TV becomes one of the very few Indian companies with cricket franchise ownership across three different continents. Only a select few Indian entities have played this global game at scale:
- Reliance Industries leads the pack with Mumbai Indians (IPL), MI Cape Town (SA20), MI New York (MLC) and MI Emirates (ILT20).
- Chennai Super Kings Ltd. Owns CSK in the IPL, Joburg Super Kings in SA20 and Texas Super Kings in the MLC.
- Knight Riders Group, backed by Shah Rukh Khan and Red Chillies Entertainment, owns franchises in IPL, CPL, ILT20 and MLC.
- GMR Group has Delhi Capitals (IPL) plus teams in ILT20 and SA20.
- Capri Global owns UP Warriorz (WPL) and Sharjah Warriors (ILT20).
Now, Sun TV joins that A-list club and they are bringing their signature style with them. This acquisition is a clear sign of where global cricket is headed.
Indian companies are shaping the sport’s future across borders. With Northern Superchargers now under their wing, Sun TV has a front-row seat in one of the fastest-growing formats in England. Regardless of where you are watching from, the Sun is clearly rising everywhere.
