In the latest developments, the Sun Group, owned by Kalanithi Maryan, has bought 100% stakes in The Hundred team, Northern Superchargers. Kavya Maran, the CEO of the Sun Group, is a co-owner of the Sunrisers Hyderabad, a team in the Indian Premier League owned by the Sun Group.
In this article, we will look at the three teams owned by the Sun Group and, in turn, by Kavya Maran across leagues worldwide.
3. Sunrisers Eastern Cape
The Sunrisers Eastern Cape is a team in the SA20 league, the franchise league of South Africa. The Sun Group has held a 100% stake in this team since the inception of the tournament. Notably, the Eastern Cape has won the first two editions of the tournament, and they have made it to the final of the 2025 edition and will be taking on the MI Cape Town in the summit clash.
2. Northern Superchargers
The Hundred is a league that was so far owned and organised by the England and Wales Cricket Board. However, starting in 2025, franchises will take over the teams, and six teams have already been sold to different owners. The Sun Group, led by Kavya Maran, has bought a 100% stake in the Northern Superchargers. As the reports suggest, the investment in the deal has been around £100 Million.
1. Sunrisers Hyderabad
The Deccan Chronicle Holdings Ltd previously owned the Hyderabad franchise in the Indian Premier League. Gayathri Reddy was the owner of the team. However, the team was disbanded in 2012, and it was then taken over by the Sun Group. The team was renamed Sunrisers Hyderabad. Since then, the Sun Group has held the team's ownership and won the IPL title in 2016.
