Sri Lanka Provides Wanindu Hasaranga Injury Update Ahead Of World Cup 2023

Sri Lanka cricketer Wanindu Hasaranga is yet to recover from the hamstring injury he picked up during last month’s LPL 2023 season. The 26-year-old was subsequently forced to sit out of his side’s Asia Cup 2023 crusade at home, and might well skip the forthcoming 2023 World Cup in India as well.

However, Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) seems to be exploring every possible option in a bid to include Hasaranga in the team flight to India for the tournament.

SLC looking to fast-track Hasaranga back into the side

Sri Lankan team, under Dasun Shanaka, will commence their 2023 World Cup campaign with a match against South Africa on October 7 in Delhi. While it remains an unlikely scenario that Wanindu Hasaranga will have attained full recovery in time for Sri Lanka’s opening fixture, the country’s cricket board is trying everything in its power to extract the ace spinner’s services in some manner for the tournament.

Sri Lanka medical panel head Arjuna de Silva recently stated that the board is consulting foreign doctors to check if Hasaranga needs a surgery or not. While he admitted that the current situation is not looking ideal for the star all-rounder, they are trying their best to get him to play at least some of Sri Lanka’s important matches at the 2023 World Cup.

While speaking with The Sunday Times, Arjuna said:

“We are consulting foreign doctors to see whether he needs surgery or not. If he does, he will be out for at least three months. At the moment, the situation is not that great and it’s highly unlikely if he can play the World Cup.”

“Since he is a key weapon in our attack, we are looking at other options to see how best we can get his services at least for important games. All that depends on the opinions of the consultant to whom we are trying to show his reports.”

In the absence of Wanindu Hasaranga, Sri Lanka lost to India by 10 wickets in the Asia Cup 2023 final at home. The 26-year-old continues to remain one of the integral members of the national side, especially across both white-ball formats.
