'He Had The Opportunity...': Sehwag Shows Disappointment After Shubman Gill's Indore Ton

After a missed century by just 26 runs in Mohali's opening ODI against Australia, Shubman Gill bounced back with a spectacular performance at the Holkar Stadium in Indore in the second ODI on Sunday as he continued with his rich vein of form and scored a stunning ton.

Though Gill managed to score his sixth ODI century, breaking numerous records in the process, former Indian opener, Virender Sehwag wasn’t really impressed as he believed Gill could have done more.

Speaking to Cricbuzz, Sehwag expressed his dissatisfaction with the knock, pointing out that Gill should have taken full advantage of his current form to notch up a much bigger score. He hinted that given Gill's age and prime form, he missed an opportunity to reach a potential 160 or 180, or even a double century.

“He missed out last time but ensured that he got his hundred today, but I would still say that the form he is in he should have scored 160 or 180. He is now of just 25. Had he scored 200 today then he wouldn't have become tired and could have fielded as well. At 30, he would have found it difficult because he wouldn't have recovered. So it is better to score big runs now,” said Sehwag.

Sehwag further commented that while in-form players should be cautious about throwing away their wickets, Gill had ample time left in the game. With 18 overs remaining when Gill got out, Sehwag believed Gill could have been on his way to a second double century, especially on a batting-friendly track in Indore, where Sehwag himself once scored a double ton.

“When you are in form and you are scoring runs then don't throw your wicket away. When he got out, there were 18 overs still remaining. Had he played for 9-10 overs more he could have completed his second double hundred. Rohit Sharma scored three double hundreds. He had the opportunity today. A 200 has been scored at this venue by a player named Sehwag, because it is that sort of a track,” added the Indian veteran.
