In a significant turn of events, Sri Lanka have announced the injury replacements for ace pacer Dushmantha Chameera and veteran top-order batter Danushka Gunathilaka. While Kasun Rajitha has replaced Chameera, promising batter Ashen Bandara has been drafted into the team to fill the void of Gunathilaka.

Gunathilaka and Chameera damaged their hamstring and calf, respectively, which ruled them out of the tournament. Both Rajitha and Bandara were among the travelling reserves and have now been added to the main squad.

Chameera's injury might shatter Sri Lanka's World Cup dreams, as the star pacer was in scintillating touch. The right-arm seamer was crucial in Sri Lanka's much-needed victory against the United Arab Emirates on Tuesday, registering a spectacular three-for before hobbling off the field.

On the contrary, Gunathilaka's unavailability must not bother the Lankan think tank, as he has been struggling with his form since the Asia Cup 2022. However, as Sri Lanka have the cushion of Charith Asalanka to shoulder the middle-order batting responsibilities alongside Bhanuka Rajapaksa and Dasun Shanaka, Bandara might have to wait for his chances to feature in the showpiece event.

Sri Lanka have had a roller-coaster ride in the tournament so far. Battling with poor form and injuries to key players, they currently occupy the third spot in the Group A points table.
