South Africa's star pacer, Anrich Nortje was ruled out of the Champion Trophy squad due to a recurring back injury. The 31-year-old speedster, who last represented the Proteas during the 2024 T20 World Cup, was initially included in the squad with hopes of a timely recovery. However, the Proteas have announced his replacement in a recent development.

Corbin Bosch, who just made his ODI debut against Pakistan in December 2024, is named Anrich Nortje's replacement. Known for his express pace and ability to dismantle batting line-ups, Nortje’s absence left a void in South Africa’s attack, particularly in subcontinental conditions where his experience could have been pivotal. However, the team will now rely on the all-rounder Bosch who is also known for his explosiveness with both the bat and the ball.

Nortje's Void Filled By Bosch

The right-arm quick, Nortje's IPL 2025 campaign also seems doubtful though the graveness of the injury is not known yet. Nevertheless, the pacer has taken 36 wickets in 22 ODIs, with his last 50-over appearance coming during Australia's tour of South Africa in 2023.

Corbin Bosch, meanwhile, has been handed the opportunity to fill Nortje’s shoes. Despite limited international exposure, having played just one Test and one ODI since his debut in December 2024, Bosch brings versatility as a seam-bowling all-rounder. His inclusion adds depth to a pace attack now led by Kagiso Rabada, with support from Lungi Ngidi and Marco Jansen.

Proteas’ Revised Pace Strategy

With Nortje unavailable, South Africa’s bowling responsibilities will fall heavily on Rabada, whose experience in high-pressure tournaments will be crucial. The team’s decision to opt for Bosch over specialist pacers like Gerald Coetzee or Ottniel Baartman suggests a focus on balancing the squad with all-round capabilities. Bosch’s ability to contribute with both bat and ball could prove valuable on the pitches expected in Pakistan.
