The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has come under heavy criticism following an alarming incident in the first ODI between Pakistan and New Zealand at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore. New Zealand all-rounder Rachin Ravindra suffered a serious head injury after misjudging a catch, raising concerns over the stadium’s lighting conditions.

The incident occurred during the 38th over of New Zealand’s bowling innings when Pakistan’s Khushdil Shah played a slog sweep. Positioned at deep backward square leg, Rachin Ravindra attempted to take the catch but seemingly lost sight of the ball under the floodlights. The ball struck him directly on the head, causing immediate bleeding.

New Zealand’s medical team rushed to his aid, covering his face with towels to stop the bleeding before escorting him off the field. Ravindra was initially assessed on the field and later underwent a Head Injury Assessment (HIA), which he passed. However, he remains under medical observation.

Fans Slam PCB Over Poor Lighting at Gaddafi Stadium

What was meant to be a showcase for Pakistan’s newly renovated Gaddafi Stadium has now turned into a PR disaster for the PCB. Fans took to social media to criticize the quality of the newly installed floodlights, blaming them for Ravindra’s injury.

Although, the Gaddafi Stadium has undergone renovations including installations of various modern technical facilities and amenities, including new lights, have seemingly faltered on this occasion.

Interestingly, according to Dr. Nauman Niaz and Rashid Latif, the adjustment of the LED lights at Gaddafi Stadium was not done properly before scheduling the match, which might have caused the low lighting.

Here's a look at what netizens said about Gaddafi Stadium's poor lighting:

The incident has reignited discussions about international cricket infrastructure and safety standards. Some experts and fans are also urging the International Cricket Council (ICC) to reassess the suitability of Gaddafi Stadium as a Champions Trophy venue.

The PCB, already facing scrutiny over the management of international matches, is now under pressure to address lighting concerns before the marquee tournament.

New Zealand Clinch Victory Despite Ravindra’s Injury

Despite the unsettling moment, New Zealand secured a commanding 78-run victory over Pakistan. Glenn Phillips, Kane Williamson, and Daryl Mitchell played crucial roles in setting a challenging target of 331 runs.
