In their final group game of the T20 World Cup, Netherlands lost to Sri Lanka by 83 runs, and veteran all-rounder Sybrand Engelbrecht decided to announce his formal retirement from international cricket at the age of 35.

The Netherlands, a thriving associate nation, was knocked out of the 2024 T20 World Cup after losing a couple of close games in group stages. On their final day in the tournament, the Dutch team once again faced humiliation at the hands of Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka bowled out Netherlands for 118 runs in 202 runs chase. However, neither of them could advance to the next stage as Bangladesh and South Africa secured their places in Super 8 from Group D.

That being said, as Netherlands concluded their T20 World Cup campaign, veteran all-rounder Sybrand Engelbrecht announced his official retirement from international cricket. Sybrand, born and raised in Johannesburg city of South Africa, played provisional cricket for the Proteas before shifting base to Netherlands.

Interestingly, the Dutch all-rounder just made his debut last year. Sybrand Engelbrecht played 12 ODIs and as many T20s in his brief tenure and scored 665 runs combined while chipping five wickets in the T20 format.

While the all-rounder’s stint in international cricket was brief, he did not wish to continue any longer, especially with age limiting his physical activities on the field and due to the demanding nature of international cricket.

While Sybrand Engelbrecht didn’t specify his future plans, he is expected to continue playing in franchise leagues every now and then. A potential coaching or commentary stint could also be on the cards, depending on Sybrand’s preference.
