Sourav Ganguly for SA20 - (Source: Cricketmood/X.com)
The fourth edition of SA20 is underway in South Africa, with six teams competing against each other. Two-time winners Sunrisers Eastern Cape have got off to the perfect start with two wins in two games. The Tristan Stubbs-led side also earned bonus points, now totaling 10 points.
On the contrary, Pretoria Capitals have the worst start with two straight defeats. Ahead of SA20 2026, the Capitals' group had roped in Sourav Ganguly as the head coach, which marked former India captain's first assignment as a head coach.
The 53-year-old has previously served as Delhi Capitals' mentor, advisor, but never donned the hat of a coach before the ongoing edition of SA20.
Batting unit struggling under Sourav Ganguly's coaching
Capitals started their campaign against Joburg Super Kings and suffered a 22 runs defeat. The bowlers did well to restrict the Super Kings to 168, but the batting unit let the team down. In the second match, Sunrisers Eastern Cape put 188 runs on the board and was a chasable total.
The batters again put on an underwhelming show and the Capitals tumbled for just 140 runs, resulting in two defeats in two games.
Things went wrong at the auction table
Ganguly's coaching tenure began at the auction table, where Capitals entered the event with one of the biggest purse. However, the Capitals went all in for Brevis and roped the rising star for R16.5 Million (approximately ₹8.3 Crore).
Eyes were on Brevis to perform, but the right-handed batter has scored just 18 runs in two innings, averaging just 9.00. The overdependance on Brevis and neglecting other areas in the team has cost the Capitals so far in the tournament. It also explains why Sourav Ganguly has been at the helm of heavy criticism.
