On Tuesday, September 9, the auction for the fourth season of the SA20 League took place, and it turned out to be full of big-money deals. South Africa youngster Dewald Brevis became the most expensive player ever in SA20 history, as the Pretoria Capitals bought him for a massive 16.5 million Rand (about 11.47 crore Bangladeshi Taka).
Meanwhile, Bangladesh spinner Taijul Islam created history, becoming the first-ever Bangladesh cricketer to be signed in the SA20 League. The Durban Super Giants picked him up for 500,000 Rand (around 34.7 lakh BDT). Interestingly, Durban was the only team to bid for him, so they got him without any competition.

Because of this move, Taijul will now share the dressing room with some of the world’s biggest cricket stars, including Jos Buttler, Heinrich Klaasen, Aiden Markram, and Sunil Narine. Notably, Markram, South Africa’s T20 captain, also joined Durban for a record-breaking price.
On the other hand, while Taijul was celebrating his big moment, another Bangladeshi star, Mustafizur Rahman, surprisingly went unsold. Despite being in the marquee players’ list, none of the franchises placed a bid for him.
The auction itself was dominated by massive signings. As mentioned earlier, Brevis broke all records, overtaking the previous highest bid of 9.2 million Rand that was spent on Tristan Stubbs by Sunrisers Eastern Cape.
Although Taijul is best known for his performances in Test cricket, his T20 career is modest. He has played only two T20 internationals for Bangladesh, picking up just one wicket. However, in domestic T20s, he has appeared in 105 matches, taking 88 wickets at an average of 26.29.
It is also worth mentioning that 14 Bangladesh players were in the SA20 auction pool this year, including big names like Shakib Al Hasan, Litton Das, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Towhid Hridoy, and Mustafizur Rahman. But, apart from Taijul, none of them were picked.
