Sourav Ganguly, one of India’s most iconic cricket captains, is stepping into a brand-new role: head coach of Pretoria Capitals in the upcoming SA20 season. The tournament begins on December 26, 2025, and this will mark Ganguly’s first-ever stint as the head coach of a foreign franchise team.
Pretoria Capitals have had mixed fortunes in the SA20 so far. They started brilliantly in the first edition, topping the league stage, but lost to Sunrisers Eastern Cape in the final.
The next two seasons, however, were disappointing, as the team finished fifth on the table in both 2023-24 and 2024-25, failing to qualify for the playoffs.
Sourav Ganguly To Replace Jonathan Trott
In an official announcement, Pretoria Capitals confirmed that Sourav Ganguly will take over as head coach, replacing Jonathan Trott, who was in charge last season.
This move doesn’t come as a surprise, as Ganguly has already been the director of cricket at JSW Sports (owners of Pretoria Capitals and Delhi Capitals) since last year. Now, he will move from the backroom to the dugout, taking full control of the team’s strategy.

This will also be a new challenge for Ganguly, who has worn many hats in cricket. He was president of the Cricket Association of Bengal, later became a mentor of Delhi Capitals in the IPL, and most famously, served as BCCI president from 2019 to 2022.
The first big test for Ganguly will come on September 9, during the SA20 player auction. Pretoria Capitals are expected to make some big calls to rebuild their squad under the guidance of their new head coach.
The SA20 2025-26 season will begin on December 26, and the Capitals will play their first game on December 27 against Joburg Super Kings.
