Sri Lankan cricket fans were treated to a nostalgic yet exciting moment as the sons of two of the country’s biggest legends, Muthiah Muralitharan and Sanath Jayasuriya, went head-to-head in a club cricket game at the iconic P. Sara Oval in Colombo.

The match saw Ranuk Jayasuriya, son of the explosive former captain Sanath Jayasuriya, representing SSC, while Naren Muralitharan, son of spin wizard Muthiah Muralitharan, played for Tamil Union.

Jayasuriya vs Muralitharan Face-Off Hits Fans With Nostalgia

Naren Muralitharan has already stepped into competitive cricket with appearances in first-class and T20 matches.

While his numbers are still modest, 25 runs in first-class cricket and a couple of wickets in the shorter format, the young all-rounder carries the huge legacy of his father, who remains the highest wicket-taker in international cricket with 1347 wickets across formats.

On the other side, Ranuk Jayasuriya is steadily making a name for himself at the club level. With an aggressive batting style that reminds many of his father, Ranuk is regarded as one of the young cricketers with a lot of potential in Sri Lanka's domestic league.

Sanath Jayasuriya, one of the most destructive openers in world cricket, scored over 20,000 runs in international cricket and played a key role in revolutionising ODI batting during the 1996 World Cup triumph.

The conflict between SSC and Tamil Union could have been any other club match on paper, but the moment Muralitharan and Jayasuriya's sons stood on the same stage, it became a symbolic baton handover. Fans on social media couldn’t hide their excitement, with many calling it a “special moment” for Sri Lankan cricket.
