Suryakumar Yadav is set to fill in as Mumbai Indians captain in the absence of Hardik Pandya. Virat Kohli and his RCB teammates have left for Kolkata for the opening match of the IPL 2025 season. In other news, Dasun Shanaka has joined the Delhi Capitals camp.
Capping an eventful day in the world of cricket, here we take a look at five of the biggest cricketing news that emerged out of Wednesday, March 19.
Suryakumar To Lead MI In Hardik Pandya’s Absence Vs CSK
Suryakumar Yadav is set to lead Mumbai Indians in the absence of regular skipper Hardik Pandya for their opening match of the IPL 2025 season against CSK on March 23. It is worth noting that Hardik received a one-match ban for maintaining a slow over rate during Mumbai Indians’ final match of IPL 2024 last year against the Lucknow Super Giants. The ban carried over to IPL 2025, forcing the Indian all-rounder to miss the tournament opener for his franchise.
Mumbai Indians head coach Mahela Jayawardene confirmed that the team management will be making the temporary change by appointing Suryakumar Yadav as captain instead. Notably, Suryakumar also leads India’s T20I side.
Virat Kohli And Co. Leave For Kolkata For RCB’s Opener
Virat Kohli and the rest of his RCB cohorts took flight to Kolkata from Bengaluru for the opening match of the IPL 2025 season. The RCB team, under the leadership of new captain Rajat Patidar, will be squaring off with defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders at the iconic Eden Gardens in Kolkata on March 22.
On March 19, i.e., just a couple of days prior to the launch of the tournament, Kohli and his RCB colleagues were spotted making their way into the airport in Bengaluru.
Dasun Shanaka Joins DC Teammates As Brook’s Replacement
Sri Lankan all-rounder Dasun Shanaka hit the gym alongside his Delhi Capitals teammates T Natarajan and Dushmantha Chameera ahead of the IPL 2025 season. Shanaka was reportedly roped in by the Capitals as a replacement of Harry Brook, considering the English batter pulled himself out of the tournament for the second season in a row.
Natarajan shared the moment of his union with Shanaka on his Instagram account, where the two cricketers alongside Sri Lankan fast bowler Dushmantha Chameera were prepping themselves up for the impending IPL 2025 challenge.
Corbin Bosch Speaks After PCB’s Legal Notice For Ditching PSL
South African cricketer Corbin Bosch broke his silence after the PCB threatened him with a legal notice for prioritising IPL 2025 over Pakistan’s PSL. It is worth noting that Bosch went unsold at the IPL 2025 mega auction last year, and he was subsequently picked up by Peshawar Zalmi for PSL 2025. However, he ended up joining Mumbai Indians in IPL as a replacement for injured fast bowler Lizaad Williams. The move prompted the Mohsin Naqvi-led PCB to threaten the Proteas star with a legal notice.
As per Cricket Pakistan, Bosch has explained that he did not mean to disrespect PSL in any manner, and only chose Mumbai Indians to prioritize his future, considering the IPL-based franchise has connections in numerous other T20 leagues.
CAB Tells BCCI To Postpone KKR Vs LSG Citing Security Concerns
The Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) president Snehasish Ganguly has urged the BCCI to postpone the April 6 match between KKR and LSG at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata. Notably, the match also coincides with the religious Hindu festival of Ram Navami.
Ganguly said that CAB will not be able to provide the adequate security to the spectators in Eden Garden owing to the festivities.
