In other news, England bowling coach Tim Southee is slated to prioritize ILT20 2026 contract over coaching duties midway into the 2025-26 Ashes series.
Capping an eventful day in the world of cricket, here we take a look at five of the biggest cricketing news that emerged out of Friday, August 29.
Shubman Gill Starts Training, Joins BCCI COE
Indian T20I vice-captain Shubman Gill has reportedly started training for the upcoming 2025 Men’s T20 Asia Cup after recovering from the flu. The report also indicated that the dynamic right-handed batter has joined the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) Centre of Excellence (COE), as per the TOI. Shubman Gill was forced to miss the opening round of the Duleep Trophy 2025 season earlier this month owing to a viral infection. The 26-year-old last played a T20I match for Team India back in July 2024 during India’s white-ball tour of Sri Lanka.
India To Skip Group Travel For Asia Cup 2025
The Indian cricket team will be skipping group travel as they are allowed to fly directly to Dubai for the upcoming 2025 Men’s T20 Asia Cup. The players usually first assemble in Mumbai before taking flight together on overseas tours. However, this time the players have been allowed to fly directly to Dubai from their respective home cities. The Indian team, led by captain Suryakumar Yadav, will touch base in Dubai on September 4, i.e., roughly a week prior to the launch of the continental event.
India Likely To Play Asia Cup Without Jersey Sponsor: Report
The Indian cricket team will reportedly play the upcoming 2025 Men’s T20 Asia Cup in UAE without any jersey sponsor, as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is yet to find any sponsorship partner. Earlier this month, fantasy sports company Dream11 pulled out of Team India sponsorship after the Indian government passed a new “Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill, 2025”, which bans real-money gaming platforms in the country.
Rajeev Shukla Replaces Roger Binny As BCCI President: Report
Former Indian cricketer Roger Binny has reportedly stepped down as the President of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). Since Binny turned 70 earlier this month, a BCCI rule indicates that no office-bearer can continue at the position after crossing this age limit. The stepping down of the 1983 World Cup-winning cricketer has paved way for veteran cricket administrator Rajeev Shukla to become a temporary BCCI vice president.
Tim Southee To Leave England Duty Midway Into Ashes 2025-26
England bowling coach Tim Southee will be leaving his coaching duties midway into the 2025-26 Ashes series in Australia later this year to feature in the ILT20 2026 season in the UAE, as reported by the Telegraph. The former New Zealand fast bowler will likely be replaced by legendary England all-rounder and former captain Andrew Flintoff.
Tim Southee is scheduled to represent the Sharjah Warriorz franchise in ILT20 2026, and the tournament itself will commence from January 10.
