Former India cricketer Roger Binny, who was part of the 1983 World Cup-winning team, has stepped down as the President of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). He had taken over the role in October 2022, replacing Sourav Ganguly.

Binny recently turned 70 years old on July 19. According to BCCI rules, no office-bearer can continue once they cross this age limit. Because of this rule, he had to leave the position.

With Binny stepping down, Rajeev Shukla, the BCCI Vice-President, has temporarily taken charge. Shukla, who is 65, has been in the Vice-President’s role since 2022.

What Happened In The Recent BCCI Meeting?

On Wednesday, the BCCI held an important meeting, but Binny was not present. The meeting was chaired by Rajeev Shukla. The main issue discussed was sponsorship.

Currently, BCCI is looking to end its deal with Dream11 and find a new sponsor. The problem is that the Asia Cup is starting on September 9, which leaves very little time to sign a new deal.

A BCCI source told Dainik Jagran:

“We don’t even have two weeks left. We are trying, but floating a new tender, completing legal processes, and handling technicalities will take time. As for a short-term sponsor only for the Asia Cup, we are not going that way. Our focus is on securing a sponsor for the next two-and-a-half years, until the 2027 ODI World Cup in October-November."

India has passed the National Sports Governance Act, which raises the age limit for sports administrators from 70 to 75. However, this law has not been officially implemented yet.

That means the BCCI still has to follow its existing rules, which were approved by the Supreme Court. As per these rules, Binny had to step down, and the BCCI will now have to hold its Annual General Meeting (AGM) and elections next month.
