Indian Test captain Shubman Gill experienced severe pain in his neck after hitting a boundary against South Africa on Day 2 of the series-opening first Test at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata. The cricketer did not return to bat as India folded up for just 189 to gain a mere 30-run lead over the visitors.
After the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed that the board's medical team is tending to the cricketer, further reports now indicate that the 26-year-old has now been taken to a hospital in Kolkata for medical scans.
BCCI awaiting scan reports to decide Shubman Gill’s return
As reported by the Times of India late on Saturday, November 15; Indian Test captain Shubman Gill has now been taken to a hospital in Kolkata by the BCCI medical team. The report also indicates that the cricketer might remain under observation, should such a need arise.
For the moment, his vitals and other markers are in order. However, the BCCI medical team is now waiting for reports before taking a call over Shubman Gill's further participation in the ongoing Eden Gardens Test against the reigning WTC holders.
Earlier in the day, Indian fast bowling coach Morne Morkel had downplayed the situation, saying that Shubman Gill "woke up" with a stiff neck in the morning. The former South African cricketer also praised Gill for his fitness.
Nonetheless, without Shubman Gill, Team India crumbled for just 189 in 62.2 overs, despite reaching 132-3 at one stage of the day. KL Rahul top-scored in the innings for Team India with a cautious 39 off 119 balls.
Washington Sundar, legendary all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja and comeback man Rishabh Pant also struck 20s in the innings. South Africa reached 93-7 by stumps to take a 63-run lead over the hosts.
