After a disappointing Test series against South Africa in Kolkata and Guwahati, the caravan has now moved to Ranchi, where India will lock horns with the Proteas in the first of the three-match ODI series. The Men in Blue are under a lot of pressure following their recent underwhelming performance in red-ball cricket.
Amid the criticism, the fans are rejoicing in the return of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, but still India are without two of their white-ball talismans. Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer are not part of the ODI set-up for the upcoming series because of recent freak injuries.
Iyer dealt with a spleen injury during Australia tour, and it nearly turned into a fatal accident. The right-handed batter has been advised to stay out of action for a long period of time, and reports suggested that Iyer might not return before IPL. Meanwhile, Gill had felt discomfort in his neck in the 1st Test vs SA and was ruled out of the entire series.
Morkel drops positive update on Gil and Iyer
The fans are worried about the status of the two star players, but in the latest events, India’s bowling coach Morne Morkel has revealed that Gill is doing better, and Iyer has already started his rehab.
“I think the best is for the medical [team] to give that update. I spoke to Shubman two days ago just to check in with him, and he is recovering well. So, that is pleasing to hear," Morkel said in Ranchi on Friday.
“Shreyas has also started his rehab, which is great. So, we are looking forward to welcoming them back into the squad. The good thing is that they are healthy, and they are starting their preparation on their way back into the team,” he added.
For the upcoming ODIs, Ruturaj Gaikwad has been called in place of Gill, while Rishabh Pant has earned a place back in the Indian team in Iyer’s absence.
