Shubman Gill could travel with Team India [Source: AFP]
There has been a lot of confusion about whether Indian captain Shubman Gill will be fit for the second Test against South Africa, which is set to begin on 22 November at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati.
Gill injured his neck during the first Test in Kolkata and had to be taken to the hospital on Day 2 for further checks. Due to the injury, he did not come out to bat in India’s second innings on Day 3, and the team eventually lost the match by 30 runs while chasing 124.
Shubman Gill's condition has improved
Notably, the good news is that Gill’s condition has improved. Reports say he is now stable, able to walk normally, and can move his neck with much less pain than before. This is an encouraging sign for the Indian team, which struggled after he left the field.
According to a report by the Times of India, Gill might travel with the team for the second and final Test. Gill stayed under medical observation overnight, and doctors say he is showing positive signs of recovery.
Since the first Test ended in just three days, the team has remained in Kolkata and will have an optional practice session at Eden Gardens on Tuesday.
As per the original plan, Team India will fly to Guwahati on Wednesday. While it is not officially confirmed yet, there is a fair chance that Gill will travel with them. If he is not ready by then, he could join the team a day later on Thursday.
The final decision will be taken after another medical check-up, as doctors have advised him to rest for now. His chances of playing the second Test are currently considered 50-50.
Gill had only a brief appearance in the first Test. He came out to bat after Washington Sundar was dismissed on Day 1 but faced only three balls before the injury forced him off the field. In his absence, vice-captain Rishabh Pant led the team during South Africa’s second innings.
